Gettysburg is known as the crossroads of our country, what happened here in the summer of 1863 on the days of July 1 - 3 very well could be described as the saving of our country. On those three days almost 160,000 soldiers descended on our little burg and fought one of the bloodiest battles in our nations history. The Battle of Gettysburg forever cemented the towns place in history. Millions of tourist's visit each year to take in the history, ambiance, and small town culture that abounds here just north of the Maryland border.
Gettysburg offers the traveler many different options, with plenty of things to do besides the battlefield. Take the time to walk around the town, enjoy the old homes and buildings, grab a bite to eat, listen to some local music, there is plenty to do here after a long day touring the most visited battlefield in America.
Our Eisenhower connection. Many know that President Dwight D. Eisenhower made his home here in Gettysburg both during his presidency as well as his retirement home afterward. What many do not know is the story of how Eisenhower came to find Gettysburg in the first place. During WW I Eisenhower was a young captain and commander of Camp Colt, a tank-training facility based right here in Gettysburg. It was during his time as commander of the camp that he fell in love with the beautiful rolling hills surrounding the town, as well as the easy farm life pace of the town.
